Maksym Rylskyi–Leonid Bulakhovskyi–Yosyp Bahmut:
Ukrainian Lexicology and Problems of Scientific Translation

Abstract

The development of Ukrainian linguistics in the 1950s –1960s is connected with the formation of scientific and educational centres, lexicological analysis and scientific research of the Ukrainian language, appearance of basic works and multivolume academic editions. Multifaceted creative activity and wide scientific interests in various spheres of Ukrainian and Slavic Studies are typical for M. Rylskyi and L. Bulakhovskyi. Both scholars have created their own scientific schools and promoted the formation of Ukrainian humanitarian studies. Working together with L. Bulakhovskyi and M. Rylskyi, Y. Bahmut is among those who has revived the tradition of Ukrainian Slavic School intermitted in the 1920s –1930s, and assisted the development of Ukrainian scientific language (M. Rylsky) first of all in the sphere of lexicology and lexicography. The achievements of Ukrainian lexicology are connected, in particular, with the formation of social and political vocabulary, development of the terminological system and scientific translation. These tasks are in the spotlight of M. Rylskyi, L. Bulakhovskyi, Y. Bahmut. M. Rylskyi has stated his theoretical ideas in the field of lexicography in a number of works where he points out the prominent role of dictionaries in the development of the language. He has arised the prestige of the dictionary, lexicography matter among academicians and in society as a whole. Y. Bahmut has devoted his activity to the process of formation of the scientific and publicistic styles of modern Ukrainian literary language. It is known as not an easy one. The doctoral thesis carried out under the guidance of L. Bulakhovskyi is on the analysis and principles of Ukrainian translation of socio-political literature. The work, according to M. Rylskyi, is a cause of a great value and is important for the editorial revision of the dictionary (Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary, 1948). Y. Bahmut has edited also Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary (1956) and academic Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary in three volumes (1968). Theoretical observations are summarized in Y. Bahmut’s monograph Problems of Social-Political Literature Translation into Ukrainian (1968). The results of the research are based on a huge factual material and numerous examples. Y. Bahmut has translated fiction writings into Ukrainian and is known as a member of the Union of the Writers of Ukraine. Y. Bahmut as a scholar and translator has emphasized the significance of normative linguistics and insisted upon the highest possible faithfulness of scientific translation, in particular when it deals with idiomatic constructions and phraseological units. Studying the scientific experience of Y. Bahmut and other prominent Ukrainian linguists gains special meaning in the conditions, when Ukrainian language is unyoking cultural and language dependence, that requires thorough research in order to delineate functional and historical dimensions of their academic heritage.
