as a Head of an Academic Institution
Abstract
This article deals with peculiarities of Maksym Rylskyi’s heuristic thinking as a head of an academic institute – the Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnography (hereinafter – IASFE), where he worked throughout 1944 to 1964 and which was later named after him. This publication is based on documentary sources (ego-documents) related to the organization of scientific and publishing activities, as well as works and public speeches by individual IASFE research workers: namely, a review on the lecture by the Ukrainian kobzar Mykhaylo Polotay The Art of Kobzars and Ukrainian Folk Songs in Gogol’s Works; a Maksym Rylskyi’s note addressed to Pavlo Danylovych Pavliy apropos of the preparation for publishing the first and second volumes of the edition Scientific Notes of the Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnography of the Ukrainian SSR’s Academy of Sciences (1941 to 1945); a Maksym Rylskyi’s note to Fedir Ivanovych Lavrov concerning the publication of Filaret Kolessa’s article Yuriy Matviyovych Sokolov; a text of a Chumak song written by Maksym Rylskyi from memory; a review on Oleksiy Dey’s article Ivan Franko on the Nature of Ukrainian Folklore; a Maksym Rylskyi’s article Shevchenko in Folk Art; a Maksym Rylskyi’s letter in defense of a folklorist and literary scholar Mark Plisetskyi; a photocopy of Maksym Rylskyi’s piece of poetry New Year’s; and a 1960s Maksym Rylskyi’s photo (taken in the garden by his house in Kyiv).
