Maksym Rylskyi and Periodical Folk Art and Ethnography
Abstract
The history of the Folk Art and Ethnology journal (it’s the current name of the journal) has started with the creation of the Ethnographic Bulletin (A. Loboda, V. Petrov, editors-in-chief), published by the Ethnographic Commission of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. The journal has undergone changes in the name (Ethnographic Bulletin, Ukrainian Folklore, Folk Art, Folk Art and Ethnography) or the editorial board as well as in the structure of the journal and its content because of the series of unfavourable events for Ukrainian science and culture. The journal has not been published at all for some time for objective reasons – from 1933 to 1936 in the connection with the accusations of bourgeois academicism and nationalist manifestations, during the Second World War and the post‑war period (1942–1956).
The Institute has also undergone reorganizations and change of managers. Thus, during the evacuation to Ufa, at first there was a folklore department at the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, from 1942 – the Institute of Folk Art and Art of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR under the leadership of M. Hrinchenko, and after his death – M. Rylskyi. The work of the Institute has been resumed in Kyiv from March, 1944. At that time, departments representing all areas of Ukrainian art studies, folkloristics and ethnography are distinguished in the Institute, which has caused again the change of the name of the scientific institution – Institute of Art Studies, Folkloristics and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
The resumption of Folk Art and Ethnography journal under the leadership of M. Rylskyi has been aimed not only at informing the reader about the scientific achievements of the Institute, but also the description of the artistic and cultural life of the republic, popularization of folk art, attraction of a wide range of contributors. M. Rylskyi as the editor-in-chief has changed significantly the content of the journal by introduction of new sections, published the annual content grouped by sections, promoted actively the editions of the Institute and the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, etc. in order to implement the main goals. All those have caused an increase in the circulation of the journal. Preservation of the best traditions of previous editions, innovations determined by the requirements of the time, the organization of scientific and publishing activities of the multidisciplinary Institute in general reveals another facet of M. Rylskyi personality as a talented manager and organizer.
