Public Figure Tadei Rylskyi in the History of Ukrainian Folkloristics

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the famous cultural and educational figure of the Kyiv old community, economist, ethnographer, folklorist Tadei Rylskyi. The relevance of the topic is determined by the need for a deep comprehension of the folkloristic-ethnographic heritage of Tadei Rylskyi, which will serve to the creation of an objective conception of the process of historical development of Ukrainian science on folklore. The article authoress is aimed to sum up the results of previous searches of Ukrainian and foreign scholars, to determine the contribution of Tadei Rylskyi to Ukrainian folkloristics on their base. These tasks are solved with the help of descriptive, comparative-typological and comparative-historical scientific methods. The chronological limits of the study include the mid to late 19th century, where Tadei Rylskyi is represented as Ukrainian public figure and folklorist in the context of the national revival of that time. According to the results of the analysis, it is ascertained that his investigation To the Study of Ukrainian National World-View (1888–1890) has become a peculiar encyclopedia of the spiritual life of the peasantry throughout Ukraine. He is one of the first to analyze the reflection of Ukrainian mentality in folk art and customary law. And the folklore records of T. Rylskyi preserved from oblivion are highly appreciated by the researchers and published after his death in the Collection of Folk Ukrainian Songs by M. Lysenko (1903) and in the Folk Art and Ethnography journal (1970).
