History of the yearbook: “Materials to Ukrainian Ethnology” is a scientific yearbook published in 1928–1930 (3 issues in total) by the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kyiv. The publication was renewed in 1995 at the initiative of the head of the department “Ukrainian Ethnological Center” of the M. Rylskyi Institute of Art Studies, Folkloristics and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Hanna Skrypnyk (former long-time editor-in-chief) with the aim of continuing the tradition of academic ethnological science of the 1920s, aimed at popularizing objective ethnographic knowledge and unbiased views on the history and culture of the Ukrainians.
Scope: The scientific yearbook highlights the problems of ethnoculture and methods of its research, preservation and transmission in the post-industrial information space. In the first renewed collection – issue 1(4) – topical problems regarding the origin and ethnic history of the Ukrainian people, the formation of its ethnic lands, the historical and ethnographic zoning of Ukraine were raised; the features of the ethnopsychological identity of Ukrainians, the modern state of the nation's national self-awareness is disclosed. In the following issues, research on ethnic and intercultural interaction in the spheres of history and culture is presented, regional features of household culture in the border areas of settlement, new aspects of study and modern forms of presentation of material culture, spirituality in the context of broadcasting ethnic tradition are highlighted; problems of national self-determination and identification in the modern world are raised; studies of Ukrainian ethnoculture abroad are presented. In the special issues, domestic ethnology is represented in names; topical issues of Ukrainian ethnology in the light of the scientific heritage of P. Chubynskyi, F. Vovk, E. Spaska, V. Kravchenko, etc. were considered and analyzed; the issue of material and spiritual semantics in the ethno-cultural context, ethnic identification against the background of modern globalization processes and ethno-cultural interactions is raised.
