Ethnographic Issues on Pages of the First Encyclopedic Edition in Ukrainian Studies

 

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the analysis of ethnographic information submitted on the pages of the encyclopedic edition in Ukrainian studies “The Ukrainian People in Their Past and Present.” It has been confirmed that important aspects of the ethnogenesis and ethnic history of the Ukrainian people are described in this fundamental work as well as the area of Ukrainians resettlement at the early-20th century is considered. It has included several regions those are now a part of neighboring states. It is noted that the main principles of the customary law of the Ukrainian people are testified on the pages of edtion and the distinct status of the Ukrainian language is justified. The content of F. Vovk’s essays concerning the anthropological features and ethnographic characteristics of Ukrainians as an ancient and unique Slavic ethnos, is analyzed. It is emphasized that the achievements of the prominent Ukrainian scholar-ethnologist in the field of Ethnography have not lost their significance to the present day.
