Activities of Ukrainian Restaurants in Great Britain in the Context of «Cultural Diplomacy»

Abstract

Social and cultural aspects of the activities of Ukrainian cuisine restaurants abroad are analyzed exemplified by the London restaurant «Albina». On the one hand, this is the creation of an opportunity for Ukrainian migrants to feel a connection with the Motherland through the national dishes, communication in their native language, elements of folk decorative and applied art in the interior, thus contributing to the preservation of national identity. On the other hand, this is popularizing Ukrainian cuisine among foreigners («gastro-diplomacy»), promoting Ukrainian cultural narratives abroad. The other aspects of the activities of the restaurant, in particular, active volunteer work, which is carried out in the conditions of war, are also considered. The source base of the article consists in the author’s own field materials: an interview with the founder of the institution, Ms. Alla.
